Pinotage
Pinotage is a grape variety that is unique to South Africa and is a cross between the Pinot Noir and Cinsault grapes. It was first created in 1925 by a scientist named Abraham Izak Perold, who was attempting to combine the best qualities of the two grapes. Today, Pinotage is considered South Africa's signature grape variety.
Pinotage wines are known for their deep color and bold, full-bodied flavor profile. They typically have intense aromas of dark fruits, such as blackberry and plum, as well as hints of chocolate and spice. On the palate, Pinotage wines are rich and complex, with firm tannins and a long, lingering finish.
While Pinotage can be challenging to grow and requires careful attention in the vineyard, when done right, it can produce some truly exceptional wines. It is especially well-suited to South Africa's warm, dry climate, where it thrives in the country's many wine growing regions.
If you're a fan of bold, full-bodied red wines, Pinotage is definitely a grape variety worth exploring. Try pairing it with grilled meats, hearty stews, or strong cheeses for a truly memorable dining experience.
