Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a grape variety that is synonymous with Californian wine. Though its exact origins are a mystery, it is widely believed to have come from Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, where it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski. It was brought to the United States in the 19th century and found a new home in California's warm and sunny climate.

Zinfandel is often associated with big, bold, fruit-forward wines with high alcohol content, but it can also produce lighter, more delicate styles. The grape's versatility means it can be made into red, white, and rosé wines.

In its red wine form, Zinfandel can produce wines with flavors of blackberry, raspberry, cherry, and spice. Some Zinfandels are aged in oak barrels, which can add flavors of vanilla, caramel, and toast. Zinfandel is often blended with other grape varieties, such as Petite Sirah, to add complexity and structure to the wine.

White Zinfandel is a rosé wine made from Zinfandel grapes. It was first produced in the 1970s when a winemaker accidentally left his Zinfandel juice in contact with the grape skins for too long, resulting in a pink-colored wine. Today, White Zinfandel is a popular and easy-to-drink wine, often with flavors of strawberry, watermelon, and citrus.

Zinfandel's popularity in California has led to it being considered the state's signature grape variety. While it is grown in other parts of the world, it remains most closely associated with California and is celebrated with annual festivals and events dedicated to the grape.
